Teaching myself to put me first, before my day Job as an educator.

In 2015 I participated in a Wilderness First Aid training so that I could take middle schoolers on week-long canoeing and camping trips. The instructor at the training said something that has lived rent free in my mind since.
"After a day of canoeing, sloshing through mud and streams, when you get to the campsite at night, the first thing you need to do is take off your shoes. To avoid blisters, you need to dry out your feet, put on dry socks and then put on your campsite shoes. There will always be something else for you to do. But you must take care of yourself first in order to best show up for the campers."
I started my teaching career in 2019 and quickly learned just how all-consuming teaching can be. Just as the first aid instructor said, there is always something more to do. So, over the last three years, I have slowly tried to turn my attention back on myself for my health and happiness in order to be the best version of myself with my students and family. Starting with topics on the forefront of my mind, from becoming a first-time mom in August 2024 to the ever evolving topic of nutrition, join me as I reflect on this journey and hold myself accountable in continuing to put me first, before teaching.
